“Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in thought, for the human spirit is colored by such impression” – Marcus Aurelius
Have you ever sat at a desk too long and it feels like you body has actually changed it’s shape?
Heck, I’ve been to the chiropractor before because I used to have a sedentary job, and that sitting position was altering my actual posture and spine.
In a way, Marcus’ sage wisdom is similar to what your mom probably told you about making faces .. that if you kept doing it, your face would stay that way!
Now, she was obviously bluffing, but when applying that metaphor to your training, personal life and mindset …
The positivity of the thoughts you keep, will ultimately define and shape you.
Purging negative thoughts is not easy … especially as an athlete competing against a vast competitive landscape.
But with work, time and persistence you’ll find that the less you hang on to the bad, the easier it is to hang on to the good.
Positivity is exponential, just like negativity is.
It’s an easy choice to be positive in moments, it’s difficult to make it a habit.
You are the company that you keep.
You are the thoughts that you keep.
As Henry Ford famously stated: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t … you’re right”.
It all starts with a thought that plants a seed that is sparked by your determination and will to be who you know (and THINK!) you can be.
