GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID (GABA)

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is perhaps the most important neurotransmitter when it comes to getting proper sleep, arguably even more important than melatonin (even though both are needed, GABA regulates more processes).

VALERIAN ROOT

Sleep is that pivotal point in our day where all of our gains can be made or lost. 

Most of the Valerian Root effects are attributed to the interaction of its constituents with the GABA receptor.

Valerenic acid in Valerian Root increases brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which slows down nerve activity in the brain. It does this by binding to GABA receptors in the amygdala, the region of the brain involved in fear and emotional responses to stress. This produces a calming effect similar to benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety drugs), which is why Valerian Root has been called “nature’s valium”. 

It also increases GABA in the brain by: Preventing GABA from being taken back into nerve cells and Inhibiting the breakdown of GABA by enzymes.

Valerian Root also prevents memory loss and improves nerve cell production and development in mice by reducing corticosterone levels (mouse equivalent of cortisol) and preventing oxidative damage in the memory center of the brain (hippocampus).

EVODIA RUTAECARPA (RUTAECARPINE) 

Rutaecarpine is a molecule found in the Evodia rutaecarpa plant, which produces berries that have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to raise body temperature and reduce pain and gastrointestinal distress.  

Extracts of the plant’s fruit are being investigated for potential thermogenic and anti-cancer properties, but research on these effects is too preliminary to draw conclusions just yet.  

What is well established, however, is that the rutaecarpine molecule found in the fruit significantly reduces caffeine levels in the body.

We chose to include this in ZEN R.E.M.™ because it helps address a common problem that athletes and gymgoers run into: ingesting caffeine before late-day workouts can disrupt sleep.  

Having caffeine before a workout provides several notable benefits: greater strength, muscle endurance, and anaerobic exercise capacity.

Unfortunately, as we all know, it also interferes with sleep, and more significantly than many people realize. Studies show that that 400 milligrams of caffeine—a little more than the amount found in one serving of most pre-workout supplements—taken up to six hours before going to bed can reduce total sleep by more than one hour.

This means that many people who exercise later in the day simply can’t have caffeine, which isn’t ideal for maximizing performance and results.  

Rutaecarpine helps mitigate this drawback by eliminating caffeine from the body, allowing for both pre-workout caffeine consumption and restful sleep.  

Clinically effective dosages of rutaecarpine haven't been well established yet, but anecdotal evidence has shown that 100 milligrams is effective for negating caffeine.

TIMING & INTAKE


DIRECTIONS FOR OPTMAL USE:

Take 3 pills approximately 30-45 minutes before bedtime. For best results, do not take immediately after eating.  

If possible, fast 30-45 minutes before taking ZEN R.E.M.™ for expedited delivery in the blood stream.  

Some individuals have reported that they have weird dreams, despite their deep and restful sleep. If this happens, lower dosage to 1-2 pills.
